The semi-final at Trolli Arena - which pitted the second-tier table-toppers against the leaders of the Bundesliga - was eagerly anticipated and the underdogs put up a good fight against their more fancied opponents.
Scores were goalless after 90 minutes, forcing extra time, and that was nearly complete when disaster struck for the hosts.
Only moments earlier, Greuther Furth boss Michael Bueskens replaced goalkeeper Max Grun with fellow shot-stopper, Boznian Jasmin Fejzic, in preparation for the seemingly inevitable penalty shootout.
But as Dortmund pressed with a final attack, Fejzic was about to steal the headlines for the wrong reasons.
Substitute Ilkay Gundogan fired a shot at goal for the winners, but saw his shot cannon into the woodwork.
Fortunately for Dortmund, the rebound hit Fejzic on the back and trickled over the line to delight the travelling fans.
And that was enough for the Bundesliga giants to progress to the final, where they will meet Bayern Munich.
