Premier League 2011-12 week 30 part 1

Tottenham maintained their five-point lead over Chelsea in the Premier League with an action-packed 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Arsenal pulled away from top-four chasing rivals Tottenham and Chelsea after a comfortable 3-0 win against Aston Villa at the Emirates.

The Gunners were dominant in the first half and took the lead when Kieran Gibbs netted his first Premier League goal thanks to an unconvincing attempt of a save from Shay Given.

Theo Walcott doubled the score later in the half before a confident display in the second which brought a third from a Mikel Arteta free-kick.

Sunderland cruised to a 3-1 win over 10-man Queens Park Rangers on Saturday to stretch their unbeaten run over the visitors to 10 games.

Denmark international Nicklas Bendtner met James McClean’s cross shortly before half-time to head Sunderland ahead at the Stadium of Light

The excellent McClean then made the scoresheet with a deflected effort on 70 minutes and Stephane Sessegnon made it 3-0 six minutes later, with Taye Taiwo grabbing a consolation for QPR with a superb free-kick after 79 minutes.

Bolton pulled themselves out of the relegation zone with a crucial 2-1 win at home to fellow strugglers Blackburn Rovers.

After a stale opening half-hour at the Reebok Stadium, the game sprung into life when David Wheater scored two headers for the home team in a seven-minute salvo.

Blackburn rarely threatened and were unable to mount a comeback, despite pulling back an early second-half goal through Steven N’Zonzi.

Wigan earned their first victory at Anfield thanks to a hard-earned 2-1 win over Liverpool after goals from Shaun Maloney and Gary Caldwell.

Maloney stepped up for the visitors and put it away to give them a 1-0 lead, which they held on to until half-time.

By contrast, the second half begun with an instant equaliser for Liverpool thanks to a good finish by Luis Suarez from a Steven Gerrard cross.

But after a superb finish by central defender Caldwell, the away side took the lead again and held on for a famous victory.

Everton recorded their first away win in the Premier League since New Year’s Day with a 2-0 victory at Swansea City on Saturday.

Leighton Baines put the visitors ahead just before the hour mark with a scintillating free-kick, and David Moyes' men secured the three points with a 76th-minute strike from Nikica Jelavic.

Two first-half goals from Grant Holt helped Norwich come from behind to beat Wolves 2-1 at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Matt Jarvis opened the scoring after 25 minutes for Wolves, but a sublime one-on-one finish from Holt restored parity just a minute later, and a penalty in first-half stoppage time put the hosts ahead.

They managed to hold on to that lead and post the win, but Holt's day was soured when he was ordered off late on for a second bookable offence.

Manchester City returned the top of the Premier League for the time being after a 1-1 draw with Stoke on Saturday.

England international striker Peter Crouch gave Stoke the lead with a stunning volley in the 59th minute.

In the 76th minute, Yaya Toure smashed in the equaliser from long range, but his shot was certainly helped by a slight deflection off Ryan Shawcross.
